About the Artist

My name is David Paul Cowley. I'm a self-taught, full-time artist living and working on the beautiful Isle of Man — an island that has shaped every brushstroke and pencil line I've ever made.

A Lifelong Passion

Drawing and painting have been a passion of mine since I was a schoolboy, but like many artists, I was unable to follow that passion full time until later in life. For much of my working career I worked as a painter, decorator and sign writer — skills that brought me into close contact with some of the Isle of Man's most treasured historic buildings, including the magnificent Victorian Gaiety Theatre and the iconic Elizabethan clock on Castle Rushen.

That life as a craftsman taught me precision, patience and an eye for detail that now runs through everything I create as an artist. I've always been a perfectionist, and I bring that same dedication to every piece — whether it's a sweeping landscape, a detailed architectural study, a portrait, or a piece of local wildlife.

The Work

My subject matter is as varied as the island itself. I'm drawn to well-known Manx landmarks and hidden corners alike, as well as abandoned vehicles, wildlife, and the faces of people who matter. I work primarily in pencil, watercolour, ink, and acrylic — each medium chosen to suit the mood and character of the subject.

I also carry out commissions for customers on the Isle of Man and further afield. I take great care and attention with every commissioned piece, and I pride myself on being accessible and approachable. I always encourage customers — both existing and potential — to get in touch at any time regarding their painting or drawing requirements.

Recognition

I'm proud to have collectors of my original artworks and Limited Edition Prints across the United Kingdom, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Australia, and the United States of America.

In 2023, I was contacted by Leif Neilsen, curator of the European Art Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, who enquired whether one of my paintings could be exhibited as a permanent piece in their collection. That painting — Ravens Cliff, Douglas Head, an acrylic on canvas — is now on permanent display at the European Art Museum for all visitors to enjoy.
